A New Jersey Female Police Lieutenant claims she experienced discrimination and sexual harassment during her employment with the Middlesex Police Department.
Claims of Discrimination Arise
In regards to employment discrimination, Lt. Braconi claims that the police department demonstrated a preference to males and regularly passed over Braconi for promotional opportunities. Specifically, Braconi claims that in 2016 she was not given a promotion to captain. On the other hand, the department promoted a male officer instead. For further support, Braconi points to the state records which show she makes a lower salary than her male counterparts.
Filed earlier this year, the lawsuit alleges that the township and police department promoted a “boys club” environment and atmosphere. Braconi claims that this led to discrimination against her as a female officer. Further, Braconi’s suit includes the allegation that the department replaced her as the head of the police department’s Traffic Safety Bureau by a man because the department considered the position a “man’s job.”
Department Denies Allegations
Since Braconi filed the suit, the township and the police department deny the charges against them. In the township’s answer to the lawsuit, the township responded that it has acted in good faith and with reasonable care to prevent discrimination. The township also suggests that Braconi did not take advantage of the municipality’s preventive and corrective opportunities. In fact, in response to Braconi’s claim of her transfer, the township says that it acted for legitimate and non-discriminatory reasons.
