Common Workplace Issues Employees May Face in the Film and Entertainment Industry

September 9, 2026 by Red Bank Legal

In an industry built on tight deadlines, high-pressure set dynamics, and unconventional working conditions, entertainment professionals often face significant workplace challenges. Behind the glamour of film and television, cast and crew members frequently encounter misconduct that crosses the line into illegal behavior. Recognizing these issues is the first step toward protecting your rights and holding those who violated them accountable.

Common Workplace Issues in the Film and Entertainment Industry

Despite strict state and federal labor protections, misconduct remains widespread across film sets, production offices, and media studios. Employees face unique risks due to the importance of forming strong networks for future work, and the extreme power imbalances between talent, crew, and production leadership.

Workplace Harassment and Bullying

Harassment on set extends far beyond traditional office conflict. Because of the nature of the work, it frequently manifests as verbal abuse, aggressive intimidation, and targeted bullying. Additionally, gender-based discrimination and persistent hostility create toxic environments that compromise both employee well-being and set safety.

Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment remains one of the most pervasive issues facing production staff, actors, and behind-the-scenes crew. Illegal conduct includes unwanted physical contact during rehearsals or auditions, sexually explicit remarks, inappropriate off-hours communications, and targeted misconduct based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Power Dynamic Abuse

Power dynamics are very much in play in the television and film industry, due to the level of power or wealth certain individuals may have. Quid pro quo harassment thrives in this environment, because it relies entirely on taking advantage of such a disparity. In the entertainment sector, directors, producers, or department heads may condition casting choices, job offers, or promotions on sexual favors, and threaten to ruin a worker’s career if they refuse advances. This is absolutely illegal.

Hostile Work Environment

A hostile work environment occurs when pervasive conduct, severe verbal abuse, or inappropriate sexual behavior creates an intimidating atmosphere that interferes with an employee’s job performance. In production, this often leaves workers feeling trapped between enduring unbearable working conditions and abandoning their careers.

Retaliation in the Entertainment Industry

The fear of professional ruin keeps many victims from reporting illegal workplace behaviors. In film and television, retaliatory tactics often manifest through calculated professional marginalization. Supervisors or production companies may attempt to punish whistleblowers by reducing an actor’s screen time, cutting call-sheet hours, or excluding crew members from future project considerations.

Beyond immediate set dynamics, retaliatory actions lead to severe financial harm, lost earnings, and emotional stress. Corrupt networks may actively spread professional rumors to interfere with career advancement, destroy reputations, or enforce informal blacklisting across production companies. Under New Jersey law, employers cannot legally punish workers for asserting their rights, reporting misconduct, or participating in an investigation.
