Biography
Mr. Puerta is an associate at McOmber McOmber & Luber, P.C. in the firm’s Newark, New Jersey office. Mr. Puerta’s primary areas of practice are employment law and civil litigation. Mr. Puerta actively litigates in all areas of employment law, including but not limited to matters involving discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, as well as non-compete, whistleblower, wage and hour, and qui tam actions.
As an employment attorney, Mr. Puerta has experience litigating on behalf of employees, employers, and the federal government. Mr. Puerta began his career at two prominent defense-side law firms, where he gained first-hand insight into how employers address workplace issues. Mr. Puerta then joined the federal government as a trial attorney for the U.S. EEOC, helping to ensure employers’ compliance with the federal anti-discrimination laws and litigating against employers in the public interest and on behalf of workers.
Mr. Puerta completed his undergraduate studies at Seton Hall University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Mr. Puerta graduated cum laude from Rutgers Law School in Newark, New Jersey, where he earned his juris doctorate as a member of the revered Minority Student Program (MSP).
While in law school, Mr. Puerta participated in several student organizations, including as Vice President of the Association of Latin American Law Students (ALALS) and a member of the Labor & Employment Society. Mr. Puerta was also a staff editor for the Rutgers Race and the Law Review and a member of the Moot Court Board.
Upon graduation, Mr. Puerta completed an appellate-level clerkship for the Hon. Ellen L. Koblitz (ret.). During his clerkship, Mr. Puerta performed extensive legal research for various legal matters, including those related to wage and hour and whistleblower matters.
Mr. Puerta was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 2017 and the New York Bar in 2020. In 2022, Mr. Puerta completed a fellowship with the National Employment Law Council’s fellowship academy. Mr. Puerta currently resides in North Jersey with his wife, two daughters, and two cats.
